With over 25 years of progressive consulting and employment experience, in supporting Technical Service companies in areas including process improvement, planning and management, project management, business development, general administration and contracts management as well as Stakeholder consultations, Change Management through Business process re-engineering, Debra Donovan brings a unique breadth of experience across the financial, Oil & Gas, Utilities, Mining and Construction sectors.
Debra’s hybrid approach to business stems from the integration of her Management Accounting education (CMA program SMU), Masters in Project Management Certificate (MCPM) (SMU). In addition, she has earned her PMP certification as well as her P2RP accreditations. To support theses Project Management accreditations, she has further education in Change Management, Public Consultation, ISO Quality Auditor.
Debra’s first role was in an Engineering department for the construction of a mine site near her birth home, Timmins, Ontario. From there, her bilingual asset earned her a role as a paralegal, and from there a new role at Mutual Life in the translation department, earned promotions to management trainee, Life, in London; Branch supervisor in Montreal, and ultimately Office Supervisor, Atlantic Canada (Mortgages). This experience earned her a large role in the offshore vessel support and diving industry, followed by a management role for an Icelandic company in the fish processing industry.
At this point, her entrepreneurial attitude moved her to go on her own. During this time, she had clients who were getting ready to grow their businesses. Her key role for this group of clients, was to migrate manual financial and process systems to a computerized process; this work included some IT work, managerial accounting services and training of staff to effect the required changes for the organizations.
She led the international marketing efforts for a dimension stone mining operation and succeeded to get the product distributed across most of Canada, East and West Coast USA as well as Bermuda. Marketing and Distribution processes were identified and successfully established. This experience led her to the Project Management World. In addition to the university training and resulting accreditations, Debra has studied many courses in marketing, change management, quality assurance, project management, contract management and risk management.
Debra’s excellent understanding of processes, business strategic planning, market and business development, integration of services combined with her Project Management education and training allows her to fully understand the needs and goals of her clients and has the experience to ‘make the plan’ happen. The transition from idea to execution is her specialty. Specifically, many clients initially need her assistance to respond to technical procurement documents. It is during this process that she identifies barriers for companies to succeed in their sales process and supports the required changes and training needed within the organization to ensure a stable and profitable growth.
She has successfully led investment projects from the idea, through to acquisition, to contracts to production in Alberta with resulting profits within the first year of operations. Stakeholder management was the key to this successful investment to operations project.
Through successful RFP response procedures for large utility construction projects, the management of these projects including the integration of new processes and training with the client organization, the client successfully established a large Construction Division.
Debra was a contributor to PMI’s Construction Extension Book of Knowledge, currently participates in the ISO standard development Group (ISO 37000) for governance and works with companies to support a strategic growth through quality and education. She is a past member of the Economic Development Board for Hants County and the Halifax Chamber of Commerce.
Debra is now back to her native Ontario and currently resides with her husband in Whitby, Ontario.
