President's Message

Boozhoo, members!

As we continue to move through the summer, we’ve seen some news worth celebrating from our communities in the historic leadership placements achieved with the appointment of Mary Simon as Governor General of Canada, and the election of RoseAnne Archibald to National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

In further welcome news, Ontario is beginning to open up economically once again, and we hope your organizations, communities, and families are returning to a sense of normalcy and continuing to enjoy good health. To our members and communities affected by the threat of wildfires, we’ve included some updates and resources in this newsletter and we urge you to prioritize your safety.

We at the Anishnawbe Business Professional Association will be taking a short break from our event activities during August and September, and we look forward to hosting our members and guests again in October with an event alongside our Annual General Meeting. We will be planning ahead to begin our programming in the fall and our next fiscal year, and we invite you to take a few minutes and share with us what topics you would be most interested in hearing about in a speaker series or workshop. You can view and complete our short survey at https://abpa.live/topics to leave your feedback.

We will continue to advocate for our First Nations businesses and entrepreneurs in Northern Ontario.

Chi-Miigwetch,

Jason

A message shared from the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority

Wildfire smoke can irritate lung conditions and worsen cardiac/heart conditions that you may already have, and can also cause eye irritation, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, and headaches. These mild symptoms can typically be managed by getting yourself out of the smoky area.

More serious symptoms like dizziness, heart palpitations, severe coughing, and shortness of breath can happen in some people. If you or someone you know experience these contact your nursing station or other health professional as soon as you can.

Congratulations to Tim Carwell  (Beaver First Nation), president of CommAlert group. Carwell was recently recognized by Strathcona Country Awards of Excellence with the Mayors Award for significant contributions to the business community during COVID-19.

Carwell’s two projects, covidcontinuity.com and payitforu.com, provided resources, information, and practical assistance for frontline workers while supporting local business during the pandemic. You can read the full release below.

We are thinking ahead to our AGM and future events. Please take a moment and complete our short survey to let us know what type of topics and speakers you would find valuable at a networking or professional development event.
